She had him. Hook, line, and sinker.

That was what Ella kept telling herself as she sailed through Friday and into Saturday. Every few hours, she’d get a text from him, and every time, it brought a smile to her face as she replied.

Ella knew, deep down, that she hadn’t been the in-control seductress she wanted to bill herself as. She wasn’t even all that good at it. When he was around, she seemed to melt into a puddle of goo, especially when he looked at her in a certain way...

And that kiss. Phenomenal. It had left no doubt in her mind that she couldn’t just make him fall for her and dump him. It had been a stupid plan.

Question was, what could she do now?

As Saturday sped by, the answer was clear. She had to tell him the truth about their past. She’d just confront him, get it out in the open, and determine from his reaction whether they could move forward from here.

After her last showing, Ella knew she couldn’t delay any longer. The date was scheduled to start in a half hour. She barely had time to get home and change before Zack showed up. And he’d texted her to tell her to wear cocktail attire. So it would take her some extra time to freshen up.

Tonight. She would tell him tonight. She’d already opened the door to it by admitting she’d moved to Nashville in high school. She could lie and pretend she didn’t realize he’d been the guy who had destroyed her reputation, but she didn’t want to do that.

No, if she was going to do this, she’d be honest from the start.

But her courage quickly depleted when she stepped out of her house to find Zack standing next to his passenger-side door. He wore a dark gray suit and a white dress shirt.

Ella nearly tripped as she walked down the steps in her black pumps. She hadn’t seen him like this since the bachelor auction. He looked amazing no matter what he wore, but there was something about a suit that made him completely irresistible.

“You look nice,” she said.

She remembered holding that compliment back previously. The goal then had been to stay in control, weave her web, and get him to fall for her. But that all seemed absurd now. Hurting him wouldn’t take away the pain she’d experienced as a teen. It would just hurt her all over again, since she’d started to develop feelings for him.

“Thank you,” he said. “I clean up pretty well, or so they say.”

Ella smiled, grateful they were keeping this lighthearted. She’d had a hard time savoring this upcoming date today. She’d been too stressed about telling him the truth.

“Where are we going?” she asked as they pulled out of her driveway and turned toward the gate.

“I’m going to show you a little magic.”

That was the only hint he would give. She had to admit she was intrigued. “Magic” could mean anything.

When it became clear they were going downtown, Ella’s curiosity was officially piqued.
